Dr. George Fung

Dr. Fung was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where he graduated from University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry in 1993 followed by an additional Bachelor of Science degree (with honours) in human physiology in 1994. Fascinated by the complexity of human visual system, optics, and personally experiencing the reliance on glasses while growing up, he was able to combine his passion and interests by furthering his education and obtained his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry in 1998. During his studies, he was very active in current student affairs and served as President for the Optometry Student Association for three years. He continues to be affiliated with the University of Waterloo, by holding the position of adjunct clinical professor and devoting his clinic to optometry interns as a teaching facility. From 2000-2002, Dr. Fung served as Chief Optometrist for a national laser vision correction centre in Edmonton, and currently is an external consultant for LasikMD in Calgary.

Although Dr. Fung is well educated in the treatment of ocular diseases and injuries through extensive training at the Eye Foundation in Utah, in Salt Lake City, he practices holistic full-scope primary eye care for the entire family. His athletic nature in various sports disciplines cultivated a special interest in finding alternative methods to enhance and protect visual performance for athletes in competitive sports, whether it is through contact lenses, speciality lenses and glasses, safety goggles, sports vision therapy, or laser refractive surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Fung continues to combine various aspects of his work with play and can be seen on the baseball diamonds coaching his son’s Calgary South Division 8 Little League baseball team, or enjoying his various sports interests from skiing to golf. He is an avid photographer and is rarely seen without his camera.

Dr. Fung is currently an active member of the Alberta College of Optometrists, Alberta Association of Optometrists, Calgary Society of Optometrists, and Canadian Association of Optometrists and sits on the committees for the Canadian Examiners in Optometry and the Occupational Vision Care safety eyewear program for the Alberta Association of Optometrists.

Even though Dr. Fung is fluent in English, he is able to provide his services to his Cantonese-speaking patients when the opportunity arises.
