As a lifetime nurseryman and fruit grower, Grandpa used his experience to select and recommend only those varieties which tasted the best and which would be easy to grow by his friends and family. The fruit may not have been the reddest or most beautiful, but they usually proved themselves to be the hardiest, most flavorful, and high quality varieties. Only these made it into Grandpa's Orchard™.
Grandpa's friends were always asking for fruit growing tips. Grandpa was from a long line of fruit growers. A lot of his fruit growing lore was passed down to him from his father and grandfather, but still he was a tireless experimenter. He tried almost every new variety that came his way, but over time he tried to "whittle" it all down to a select number of varieties that "made the grade" with Grandma and that would grow well in almost every part of the country where his friends and family lived.
The best of the best varieties are referred to as: Grandpa's Choice™ While the best and most disease resistant ones became: Grandpa's Nature Friendly™ varieties
Still, there were often a lot more varieties which Grandpa liked really well. So, when someone asked for something new or different, Grandpa would tell the story behind a variety before recommending it. Grandpa passed away several years ago, but his family and his best nursery friends wanted to keep up Grandpa's good work and offer everyone his pithy common sense, fruit growing wisdom and practical knowledge. Many people ask us at Grandpa’s Orchard, whether there was or still is a Grandpa. Well the answer is yes. The original Grandpa is now deceased and would be 98 this year if he were still alive. The current Grandpa, me, is 61 and sometimes I feel 98! As a way of honoring and immortalizing “Grandpa”, we started Grandpa’s Orchard. So, yes the original Grandpa was a real human like we talk about, while the current Grandpa is his son and a little younger, but still a real grandpa with six grandchildren, and hoping that more will be coming from his four off-shoots!
