An investigation brought about after a complaint made by a woman who was caring for her nephew has revealed that hundreds of carers on Merseyside have been missing out on benefits they were entitled to.

The Transport Select Committee called on insurance companies to “put their house in order” as part of a report looking into the financial impact of whiplash injury claims on the costs of car insurance. Amongst the accusations levelled by the committee at insurance companies were that they often accepted whiplash injury claims without proper scrutiny, in some cases paying out even when they suspected a claim may be fraudulent, or before they had seen any medical evidence of the claimants injuries.

The charges have been brought in partly to offset the £74m annual cost of providing Employment Tribunals for people wishing to bring claims for everything from cases of unfair dismissal to issues over unpaid invoices. Originally created back in 1964 as Industrial Tribunals, until now, there had been no charge to bring a case through an employment tribunal.

The Department for Transport's annual summary of all road traffic accidents recorded by the Police showed a fall of 4 per cent when compared with 2011 in the overall number of accidents to just over 145,500.
