The need for truckers is estimated to grow by 11% between now and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With over 1.7 million truckers already on the highways, this equates to roughly 200,000 new jobs in the next 10 years. The trucking industry will grow at a similar rate to other industries. As the economy continues to grow, so will the need for truckers. The American Trucking Association (ATA) projects growth in the overall freight industry. However, the projections see trucking as the dominant method of freight transportation. In fact, the average revenues will increase 72% by 2015, and total freight tonnage will increase 23.5% during the same time period.

Recently, Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) introduced a bipartisan bill that would raise the Federal Gas Tax by 12 cents over the next two years. This would raise the prices at the gas pump, however many see it as a more equitable way to fix the nation's transportation problems. The money raised would be used to repair and replace aging, obsolete infrastructure, as well as replenish the Highway Trust Fund.
