According to recent research from the Construction Products Association, construction work is anticipated to rise over the course of 2016 – a significant improvement following on from what has been considered by many to be a low period in construction. Over the course of the year, a rise of 3.6% is expected in construction work – something which crucially needs supporting as the industry gets going again. The Met Office has recently released figures highlighting that December 2015 was the wettest month in the UK since 1910: the time when such records began. The month was filled with flood warnings and a number of storms, now named as Desmond, Eva and Frank. Strong winds and high levels of rain characterized much of the conditions, leading to widespread flooding. Badly hit areas in particular included West Yorkshire, the city of York and across the Lake District. Now December is over and the New Year begins, attention turns to the clean-up operation, with a number of businesses having to either reconstruct or move premises in order to address flood damage.

Recent reports on the construction industry in UK – largely focused on building and building maintenance – have revealed that the sector makes up approximately 6% of Britain's economy. Despite recent months having seen a slow-down in the construction industry, the percentage still stands; highlighting that construction plays a vital role. There have been increased calls for the services sector (which saw rising growth entering December) to help support construction and therefore allow for positive growth into 2016. This includes ensuring that construction workers have adequate infrastructure in place to take projects forward.
