Gas found in coal seams is referred as Coal Bed Methane (CBM) or Coal Seam Gas (CSG). CBM is like natural gas with methane concentration of as high as 95%, and thus can be used as a direct replacement of conventional natural gas. The major reserves of CBM are in U.S., Canada, Soviet Union, China and Australia; and they are the major producers too. Other countries with significant CBM presence such as India, Indonesia, UK, Botswana and more are also either producing or in test phase and will start production in future. Commercial deployment of CBM depends upon availability of natural gas pipeline infrastructure which needs to be extended to CBM basins.
