Antibacterial glass is developed in order to impart bactericidal and fungicidal properties on its surface. The glass is designed in a manner such that it prevents the spread of fungi as well as eliminates majority of the bacteria that form on its surface. It is developed via one of two processes: infusion and coating. Furthermore, antibacterial glass can also be developed using an active ingredient other than silver. These include copper and zinc; however, majority of the antibacterial glass developed employs silver as the active ingredient, in line with AGC's development process. On account of its properties, this glass is used where a sterile environment is required, for example in hospitals, bathrooms, hotels, etc. Technological advancements and the ready acceptance of health-improving devices are expected to be the key contributors for increasing demand for antimicrobial coatings. Additionally, the healthcare industry is a highly lucrative end-use industry for antimicrobial coatings.
