
Super absorbent polymer was first produced in 1970s, in Japan. These polymers are commonly made by polymerization of acrylic acid blended with sodium hydroxide to produce a poly acrylic acid sodium salt referred to as sodium polyacrylate. This is the most common type of super absorbent polymer used in the world today. Super absorbent polymer are majorly used in the manufacture of disposable diapers along with usage in many other applications such as adult incontinence products, feminine hygiene products and others which include absorbent pads, artificial snow, sand bags for flood control, medical waste solidification and many more. In terms of revenue the global super absorbent polymer market was valued at US$ 7.1 Bn in 2014, and is estimated to be slightly over US$ 9 Bn by 2020. In terms of volume the global super absorbent polymer market stood at 2119.5 ('000 Tons) in 2014, and is anticipated to reach a volume of 2,892.4 ('000 Tons) by 2020.
