The holidays are traditionally a time for an over-indulgence in food. When people get together for social activities, they usually have plenty of food and drink available to celebrate the season. This can be torture for someone who is sensitive to gluten, and for those who have celiac disease. Gluten is a protein found in barley, rye and wheat. It can be found in numerous foods like pastas, breads, cookies, cakes, muffins, gravy, sauces, crackers, beer, etc. A sensitivity to gluten can make someone uncomfortable and ill, but for someone who has celiac disease, eating gluten can mean a trip to the hospital with serious issues. My IdentityDoctor.com encourages those with celiac disease to wear a celiac disease bracelet, to make others aware of their condition and to help avoid inadvertently consuming foods that contain gluten.

International Day of People with Disabilities is intended to promote the understanding that people with disabilities have the same political, social, cultural, and economic needs that we all do. Regardless of their disability, it's important for the rest of society to appreciate and acknowledge not only what those with disabilities go through on a daily basis, but also the vast knowledge and experience they hold that can help enlighten and enrich us as a community.

December is AIDS Awareness Month. Although medical advancements have helped those suffering from HIV to live longer, it is still spreading voraciously, especially in the 13-24 age group. AIDS Awareness Month was designated as such so that people would get themselves tested before spreading HIV further. It is estimated that one in six people are living with HIV and don't even realize it.

Skin is human beings' largest organ. It’s our first defense against everything external, from wind, rain, exhaust, virtually anything that could potentially damage our internal organs. Since it’s the biggest organ, it’s also the most exposed and vulnerable to damage due to disease, weather, and of course, UV radiation that we all get from the sun. There are hundreds of skin conditions and diseases, and if you have one, it’s important that others like EMT’s and doctors are aware of it in a situation where you might not be able to tell them.

Every year on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout. This time period is reserved for encouraging smokers to quit their smoking habit by making a date to quit, or by pre-planning to quit on that day. Research shows that even quitting for one single day can improve a person’s health by reducing their risk of cancer.
