Fish powder is made from cooked fishes and primarily used in animal feed. Also referred to as fish meal, it is generally prepared using fishes that are not normally meant for human consumption. Most of it is manufactured using small, wild-caught fishes, sustainable fish stocks, or unmanaged by-catches. On the other hand, a small percentage of fish powder is prepared using the offal and bones left over from processed fishes consumed by humans. Fish powder and fish oil are mainly prepared from pilchard, herring, anchovy, menhaden, and other species of oily fishes. Fish powder was previously considered as an important fertilizer.
