Ed Brown, CEO of Topper Industrial, leader in the material handling equipment industry, was named Food Logistics 2016 Champions: Rock Stars of the Supply Chain. Brown, often referred to as the "Father of Fork Free Delivery Carts," helped develop a variety of industrial carts and systems for multiple applications that are used with tuggers and automated guided vehicles that have advanced the way material is delivered to the line. Topper Industrial has engineered a fleet of flexible kitting carts which function effectively and efficiently with tuggers that present sequenced kits of parts to each of a manufacturer's assembly stations. The core of the system is a supermarket storage area located in the company's warehouse. Parts and components are pulled in sequence and placed in the compartmented kitting carts that were built using proprietary pipe and joints.

Several manufacturers are implementing material handling products known as "mother/daughter" (M/D) cart delivery systems to improve operations. Topper Industrial, maker of M/D cart delivery systems, typically has two small carts within a larger cart. Bulk parts can be manually or forklift-loaded onto the two daughter carts in the stock or storage area. One or two complete M/D frames can be towed by a tugger to line-side positions and "dropped" for the assemblers to use, or daughter carts are removed and positioned for use in the cells.
