Last week, I made it known to my supporters and the media community that the main reason for my decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was that the party’s actions were not consistent with the values of internal democracy and that it has become unfriendly towards progressive politics which would have been the way forward. As a core believer in free and fair elections; after I witnessed what happened during the PDP governorship primary where no proper election was conducted to elect a rightful candidate, I found it intolerable to stay with PDP. In announcing my decision to leave the party, I focused entirely on the failure of the PDP to provide a level playing field, making absolutely no mention of Party leaders’ sentiments (or any other factor) in explaining my choice. Some of the reasons for my move from PDP to SDP are: The PDP’s position on fair and free election(s) in Oyo State was zero, the way and manner the party ran the Oyo State governorship primary which led to the emergence of Mr. Teslim Folarin was illegitimate. The fact that our people still believe in democracy, fairness, a level playing field and justice, makes it impossible for me to stay in PDP to realise this objective, and this is why I moved. . PDP has become too extreme in its position of imposing candidate(s) which negates internal democracy stipulated in the party’s constitution. The party would not obey its own guidelines and it would also not obey a court order regarding how delegates should elect the party’s gubernatorial candidate. I decided to heed the clarion call of the people of Oyo State, who are desirous of true change, and who have been calling on me to have a platform, where Omititun could actualise her people-oriented manifesto for the masses. I have not supported an idea because it's PDP’s idea or any other party’s idea. I support ideas that are good for the people of Oyo State; as voters, they are tired of politics of individuals who are not serving the needs of the people. I made the decision to join the gubernatorial race in our State to improve the standard of living of our people through responsive and responsible leadership; I am also concerned about the level of deprivation of our people in the State. My commitment to the people of Oyo State and my programmes will not change while in SDP. I state that; “Together we can do it. The struggle is not just about the next elections but about the fate of the next generation”. I have listened to my people. I have heard them. We have given them our manifesto and they are sold on our manifesto; it’s on the strength of this that they demanded that we move to another platform and that they are ready to vote for us.
