Grow Columbine Flowers

The Columbine flowers bloom in a variety of colors during spring. The columbine plant or Aquilegia herbaceous perennial easy to grow throughout the year. Their flowers are said to be a favorite to pollinator hummingbirds, bumblebees and may be used in cut flower arrangements. All species of columbine have spurs that project toward the rear of these perennial flowers, which makes them easier to identify. The scientific name Aquilegia is a Latin word for eagle which comes from these spurs which resemble eagle claws. However, the scientific name conflicts with the common name of the plant. The common name, “Columbine,” which is taken from the Latin Columba, refers to doves.
