Between 2005 and 2011, 15.7 million Americans reported having used prescription drugs for "non-medical" purposes. The National Institute On Drug Abuse's 2013 DrugFacts Survey found that 17.3 million Americans were dependent on alcohol or had problems with alcohol abuse. According to their research, illicit drug use among the American population has been on the rise.
