As the most widely used video format, MP4 format is compatible with a great variety of digital players and devices including iPod, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, Apple TV, Zune, PSP, PS3, Pocket PC, Archos and so on. However, MP4/MPEG-4/H.264 MP4 is not coded in many DVD players and some of its successors like HD DVD players, Blu-ray disc players and 3D DVD players hence it cannot be played on many DVD players. Even some DVD players are claimed to support MP4, due to specific codec required, some MP4 files still will not be played.

With the stunning Retina display and the support for 1080p video playback, the new, third-generation iPad makes everything looks and feels incredibly lifelike and perfectly detailed. However, the new iPad 3 only enables to playback 1080p H.264 video in M4V, MP4 and MOV file formats just as iPad or iPad 2 only supports playing 720p H.264 video in M4V, MP4 and MOV format. It will end in fail if we try to play 1080p MKV on iPad 3, iPad 2 or iPad.

Apple Airplay allows wireless streaming of audio, video, and photos, together with related metadata between devices. With airplay, all of a sudden, your great photos, the perfect party mix and wonderful movies are on the big screen and the best speakers. It's a pity however, we still cannot play DVD on Mac/PC and have it stream to Apple TV/iPad/iPhone. This shortcoming even prevents some people from buying an Apple TV. Although with Mountain Lion, Apple claims with AirPlay Mirroring, you can stream what's on your Mac to your HDTV via Apple TV. We still need wait to see.
