The Coconut Grove Playhouse was built in the late 1920s and it has remained in limbo since its 2006 closing. Miami-Dade County originally planned to restore the theater front while demolishing the larger auditorium to create a 300-seat theater. These plans have since been halted due to the requirements of upholding the theater's historic preservation as part of its National Register of Historic Places designation which it earned in 2018. City officials are seeking to restore the theater in its entirety.
