Studies conducted by the Health and Safety Executive reveal in excess of 8,000 occupational related cancer deaths each year in Great Britain with greater than half of those being attributed to past exposure to asbestos. This substance is also responsible for an estimated 600 annual deaths resulting from asbestosis. Though the use of asbestos has vastly declined since the discovery of its far reaching health risks in the early 1940's, it continues to linger in some older structures.
