The inhalation of asbestos fibres leads to the development of four major diseases: mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and non malignant pleural disease. According to Health and Safety Executive, 2,291 individuals died from mesothelioma or cancer of the lining of the lungs in 2011. Approximately 2,000 additional individuals died from lung cancer related to asbestos inhalation during the same year, and 429 died from asbestosis with no mention of mesothelioma being involved.
