The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European fabric fairs for the autumn/winter 2016/17 season. The author of the report visited Munich Fabric Start, Première Vision Fabrics and Milano Unica where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. Europe remains a prime source of high quality fabrics for the global fashion industry. Indeed, considerable creative skills have been employed to produce fabrics with added value and excitement. A wide variety of decorative techniques and finishes were on display at the fairs – including appliqué, burn-out printing, embroidery, overprinting and laser cutting. Fabrics with a woolly touch are important for the season, as are velvets made from a variety of fibres. Pattern and print are important in all fabrics, and prominent designs include florals, geometric shapes and motifs inspired by folk and nature.
