Engineer-to-Order (ETO) product designers face challenges to provide "mass customization" of their products better, faster, and cheaper than their competitors. An ETO automation system allows many or all portions of the ETO process to be automated, providing quicker turnaround, lower engineering costs, and consistent adherence to product rules and standards.

To survive, ETO manufacturers required new strategies and found that by developing custom, one-of-a-kind products, the margins and differentiation was possible.

One of the tools that ETO manufacturers need to stay ahead of the competition and keep operational costs low is workflow management. ETO manufacturers often have unique, complex business processes that help them differentiate their products or services from their competition. The ability to handle business processes in a predictable and timely fashion means people spend less time on non-value added activities and more time delivering quality products to customers.

Scheduling one-of-a-kind products and projects in engineer-to-order environments is quite different than scheduling for repetitive manufacturing. Production schedules are necessarily fluid in the ETO environment because the end-user customer is constantly making changes to the actual product.

ETO – Made in America. One of the headlines from an early February USA Today article reads “Manufacturing a star of an upbeat jobs report.” According to the article, factories added 49,000 jobs in January. “Higher demand is finally kicking in, particularly in emerging markets”, says economist Cliff Waldman of research group Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI. Productivity gains that let makers put off hiring last year amid economic uncertainty are wearing thin.
