Phosphorous is a combustible non metal. It is available in two major forms such as, white phosphorous and red phosphorous. White phosphorus is broadly used to make organophosphorus compounds. Scarlet phosphorus is a form of phosphorous. Phosphorus is not freely found in nature, but it is generally distributed in many minerals such as phosphates. Some of the derivatives of phosphorous such as phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus tribromide, phosphorus trichloride, sodium hypophosphite, tributyl phosphate, and triethyl phosphate, tricyclohexyl phosphine, Triphenyl phosphine, and others. Phosphorous is used for wide range of applications such as flame retardants, water treatment, plasticizers, pesticides fertilizers, agriculture and others. Phosphorus is also an important component in steel production, in the making of phosphor bronze.
