Dogs age at different rates. Humans often state one year in a dog's life is equivalent to seven years in a human's life, yet the American Veterinary Medical Association reports that a small dog is considered geriatric when he or she reaches the age of seven. For larger dogs, the age at which one is considered geriatric drops to six. As the dog ages, his or her behavior likely changes, and this may be a result of aging of the body. .
