Docklands, Victoria - Subaru’s revised WRX STI has rated ahead of the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO MR and Volkswagen Golf R in a comparison test published in the latest edition of Wheels magazine. Journalist Sean Poppitt writes: “STI is back. This is what an STI should look like.” He adds: “Some people won’t be able to cop the ‘rice racer’ image, but the pumped guards, towering wing and banzai aggression are all pure STI. It looks as if it’s been plucked straight from a special-stage, rally-bred and Yakuza-hard.” He continues: “Those boffins at Subaru have been let off the leash to inject some mongrel back into the STI.” Awarding the WRX STI 8.5 out of 10 against 8.0 for the two rivals, Poppitt concludes: “…if I wanted to bring a taste of WRC to my driveway, if I wanted to recapture the raw, honest character that forged this genre into automotive legend, I’d pick the STI. There’s a mechanicity and a raw speed that connects with the deepest part of my petrolhead soul. Not everyone will agree, and the STI is far from perfect, but this is what driving – in the purest sense of the word – is all about.” For the full nine-page comparison test, see the October edition of Wheels, out now.
