A leading debt management companyhas this week warned of the potential for more people to be drawn into debt as prices continue to rise faster than incomes. Research by The Times showed that families were being forced to spend hundreds of pounds more on daily essentials than before the financial crises hit nearly half a decade ago. It showed that the cost of heating a home had increased by 63% since summer 2008, while essentials such as potatoes and minced beef had surged by 30% and 50% respectively. The report showed that wages had been eroded by inflation, which has increased by 14%. The report quoted Alan Clarke of Scotiabank as saying “The main drag since 2011 has been inflation going up much faster than wages and employment growth. Consumers are no better off and it will get worse before it improves.” The sentiment was echoed by Kevin Fielder of UK Money Solutions who said this week “With the costs of the basics of everyday life – food, transport and heat- rising so fast something has to give. People will either do without food, heat or go into debt just to pay for their everyday living.
