Recently released statistics from the fitness industry reveal an estimated 50 million Americans currently possess a gym membership, down 16 percent from only 2 years ago. While this number seems to shed a positive outlook on the declining health status in the United States, an estimated 67 percent of gym enrollees admit they never use their membership. Among the top explanations given by those in this category are overcrowding, lack of time and adverse weather conditions.

According to the CDC, less than 50 percent of adult Americans obtain the recommended amount of aerobic physical activity on a weekly basis, with women and older adults more at risk of missing their goal. Those who reach the recommended amount consistently find it easier to maintain a healthy weight, and walking lowers a person's risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, depression and stroke.
