Many in their 40s find themselves gaining weight, despite maintaining the same lifestyle as they did in their 20s. Because the body’s metabolism slows with age, certain lifestyle changes must be made to prevent this unwanted and unhealthy weight gain. The most common measure of obesity is BMI, or body mass index. If a person’s BMI is 25-29, that person is considered overweight while a BMI above 30 constitutes obesity. Those with a BMI of 50+ are considered morbidly obese. As the body ages, the ability to metabolize food slows down and the body does not require as many calories to maintain weight. Many women, in particular, report that they consume the same caloric amount, and participate in the same activities as when they were 20; however, at age 40 they find themselves gaining unwanted weight. This may be partially due to the transition toward menopause. When women become menopausal, the metabolic rate decreases, resulting in weight gain for many women.
