US Squad Leaders for Boston Marathon Team Named

Shalane Flanagan and Dathan Ritzenhein will lead the US Squad at the next Boston Marathon. The team of runners will also include Olympic runners Desiree Davila Linden and Meb Keflezighi. Flanagan is from Marblehead, Massachusetts and placed fourth in the Boston Marathon last year. It will be Ritzenhein’s first time running the Bostin race. Ritzenhein’s coach, Alberto Slazar won the Boston Marathon in 1982. Other American’s running the race will be Adrianna Nelson, who finished in the top of runners in the 2013 New York City Marathon and Jeff Eggleston, at top US finisher at the 2013 World Championships Marathon. National Park Races Becoming Even Rarer

More and more national parks across the country are saying no to races that use the park. The Badwater road race through Death Valley National Park has been cancelled for 2013, at least.

No Racing in Death Valley Temporarily

There will be a new route for the Badwater 135 due to a National Park Service safety review. The Badwater 135, is often called the toughest race in the world, will have a new course for 2014 because of a temporary ban on sporting events in Death Valley National Park. In early December an announcement on the website for the park stated that the National Park Service had placed a temporary moratorium on issuing permits for running, cycling and other events in the park, which is located in California and Nevada and includes the Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. Park officials stated the moratorium was necessary, while a safety review is conducted, which should be complete by the end of the summer.

Winner of Istanbul Marathon Tests Positive for Drugs

Abraham Kiprotich was born in Kenya, but competes for France. Kiprotich could face a two-year competitive ban after the “A” urine sample taken. The sample was taken following Kiprotich’s November 17 Istanbul Marathon victory. The sample was found to have traces of the blood booster EPO.

The annual rankings of the top distance runners in the world, the U.S. and Canada has been released. The Running Times Runners of the Year rankings consider results from all distances on the track and roads from 3,000m to the marathon.
