The scenario is usually the same. A new runner begins a training program. A month or two later, a slight pain in the knee comes on. The runner stretches, takes some ibuprofen and keeps on running. Soon after, the runner is resting, with an ice pack on the knee. Studies suggest that as little as 20% or as many as 80% of runners are sidelined yearly. Some more than once and some for good.

The most recent data from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index found that workers from a number of industries, including transportation, manufacturing, repair and service industries were more far more likely to be obese, compared to doctors, business owners, teachers and other professionals who were least likely to have a body-mass index of 30 or over –which is the clinical definition of obesity.

Past studies have shown that walking and running provide almost the same reductions in hypertension and depressive symptoms. However a very large, recent American study has released a similar conclusion, and includes coronary heart disease on the list. However, that study actually favors running as the better activity.

A second transcontinental relay to benefit the One Fund Boston will take place one week before the Boston Marathon. The race will end in Boston eight days before this year's Boston Marathon. This is the 2nd year for the cross country race, which spans 3,300 miles.
