When new runners first begin, their goal is mainly to make it through the workout. Eventually, once their endurance is up, they move on to other goals such as increasing the number of miles in their run, and improving their overall running time. Overtime it can seem difficult to improve speed when on long runs, but it is possible and here are some suggestions to do so.
One suggestion from trainers was to take to the local gym track and alternate paces. After a five minute walk to warm up, they suggested running the straightaway and then walking the curves. Or on the road, pick different markers and run to them, then walk to another marker. What this does is train the body and the mind to accommodate quicker paces over shorter distances, and push the body to move faster thereby improving speed over time.

Breast cancer survivors have a new reason to hit the gym and find peace and calm through yoga. A recent study conducted by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center has discovered a link between a yoga practice and decreased rates of inflammation in breast cancer survivors.
The study looked at a group of women divided into two groups, those who engaged in formal yoga practice for three months and those who remained sedentary. Three months after the yoga sessions had ended those in the practicing group reported feeling less fatigue than they had been, and fatigue levels were 57 percent lower when compared to the women in the non-yoga group.
Lead author of the study Janice Kiecolt-Glaser said “This showed that modest yoga practice over a period of several months could have substantial benefits for breast cancer survivors. We also think the results could easily generalize to other groups of people who have issues with fatigue and inflammation.”
Yoga has long been held as a relaxing practice that calms both the mind and body, and practitioners of the poses rave about the benefits for persons of all fitness levels. Reductions in inflammation across the body can lead to decreased rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and even Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to this, those who are suffering from functional decline that accompanies advanced aging can benefit as well from the poses and calming atmosphere created in a yoga class.
Authors also speculated that with reduced inflammation and pain levels, some would be more likely to seek out other forms of exercise in addition to a yoga practice with their new found energy. This proves that any form of exercise is beneficial and can lead to healthier lifestyle practices all around, despite any health conditions or inhibiting factors one may face.

It’s common practice for avid runners to avoid signs of injury and to just keep training. Both athletes and recreational runners alike behave in this fashion, and sometimes the results can sideline their exercise routines for weeks or months if left untreated. For runners to avoid this and make sure they can keep up with the intensity of their training program, they should watch for these three common injuries and treat them as soon as symptoms appear.

While many dread this time of year due to the colder temperatures, a recent research has suggested that mild, regular exposure to colder temperatures could assist in helping someone lose weight or maintain weight they have lost. This means that getting outdoors to engage in any form of activity could be beneficial to our health, despite the colder temperatures.
“Since most of us are exposed to indoor conditions 90 percent of the time, it is worth exploring health aspects of ambient temperatures,” said one of the researchers from the Maastricht University medical Center in The Netherlands. He was speaking to results from a study that followed participants who spent two hours per day in lower temperatures to those who stayed indoors all the time. Ofer the course of six weeks, there was a decrease in body fat among those who spent time outside, while those who remained indoors showed no change.
Perhaps in addition to regular exercise training, we as a society need to train ourselves to spend time in temperatures outside our comfort zones. This means getting outside for a few minutes per day even in colder temperatures to give our bodies time to breathe in the fresh air and oxygen, which has also been shown to assist in weight loss goals.
