Chloroacetyl chloride is a versatile reagent and has been extensively used in organic synthesis. Chloroacetyl chloride is a bifunctional compound that makes it a useful chemical building block. Chloroacetyl chloride is incompatible with alcohols, strong oxidizing agents and bases (including amines). Chloroacetyl chloride may react vigorously or explosively if mixed with diisopropyl ether or other ethers in the presence of trace amounts of metal salts.
